We are so proud to be working with our very experienced illustrator and author team. Between the two of them they have published more than 30 children’s books, comics, educational material and more. Today, we are introducing you to Saskia, the incredible author of TimTimTom’s Underwater Adventure.
Behind the Scenes – The Author: Saskia Reusens
“I am the youngest of four children. Growing up, we were surrounded by books and reading. I would ride my bicycle from one library to another, in search of new books. I devoured every childhood classic that I could get my hands on. I loved all of the books written by Astrid Lindgren and Enid Blyton. With a neighbour, we would pretend to be the characters from Blyton’s The Famous Five series. At sixteen, I fell under the spell of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Whenever I read a book, I would become totally absorbed in its world, and often felt a great sadness when the story ended.
My professional collaboration with Katrien Van Schuylenbergh (The Illustrator of TimTimTom’s “An Underwater Adventure”) dates back to 1993, when we worked on the popular Belgian comic magazine Suske en Wiske. I handled editing, and Katrien oversaw the design.
In 2002, our first read-aloud book, De Wolkjesfabriek (The Cloud Factory) was published. It was followed, in 2004 and 2006, by the children’s books Lot-gevallen (Adventures) and Dagboek van Emma (The Diary of Emma), respectively about a girl with asthma and a girl with cystic fibrosis. Both books were part of a campaign to raise awareness of these illnesses, and their narratives focused on the importance of receiving appropriate medication.
In 2007, I published adult fiction books that were inspired by personal curiosity and which delve deep into societal taboos. These books provide a voice to those who, owing to their living conditions or social pressures, may be unable to tell their stories openly. (www.saskiareusens.be)
While I derived an enormous amount of satisfaction from these projects, I was still itching to collaborate with Katrien to write children’s stories. I jumped at the opportunity to work with her on a new series of personalised children’s books. I sincerely hope that children will have as much fun reading this book as I had writing it.”
